scientific research in the 120 laboratories has been recognized not only
nationally, but also through Europe and beyond.
In the last years, an effort has been made towards co-operation with the public

development initiatives and the primary role in communicating the constantly
generated scientific knowledge, scholarly research and know-how to the industry
for the benefit of the entire region.
The University of Patras is renowned for
research of the highest calibre and for an excellent academic environment. It
participates in a large number of important national and international research
programmes. Teaching and research interact, as research is a necessary
prerequisite for qualified teaching. The Departments prioritize their research
fields individually or in accordance with the Overall University strategy.
The
campus is situated 7 km east of the city in a beautiful his- site location
between the mountain Panachaiko and the west opening of the Korinthian Culf,
with the rocky mountains across the mainland.
At present it includes 23 buildings. More
buildings are under construction along with a new Conference Center and a new
library. The campus encompasses the 770- bed University Hospital, which ranks
among the best in the country, functions as the major regional medical center
and also serves the leaching and research needs of the school of Health
Sciences. The campus is easily accessible from the city center. A bus service is
regularly running between the campus and the city.
